Vuna, a companion app for amputees

Vuna is a free companion app for amputees in South Africa and the people who support them. We build it for our client, NAVU Mobility.

Collage after an artificial leg, Ambroise Paré, woodcut, 1575, US National Library of Medicine · with Sandro Botticelli, Pallas and the Centaur, c. 1482, Uffizi, and Thomas Baines, The Victoria Falls, Zambesi River, 1865

What Vuna does

  • A daily check-in.

A simple daily record of how someone is doing in body and mind.

  • Exercises and guides.

Matched to where each person is on their journey.

  • Peer stories and community.

Connects people with others who have walked the same road.

  • Resources in one place.

    Useful resources, gathered and curated.

  • Clinician connection.

Helps people find and stay connected to a clinician. Clinicians stay in the loop through WhatsApp or email, without having to adopt another system.

  • A view for allies.

The people who support an amputee get their own view, with guides for supporting their person.

Built for the phones people have

  • Works offline.

The daily check-in, crisis information, saved resources and the exercise library work without a connection, and everything syncs when one returns.

  • Light on data.

Designed for a low-end Android phone, expensive data and patchy coverage, in towns and rural areas alike.

  • Four languages.

English, Afrikaans, isiXhosa and isiZulu from day one.

  • Plain and one-handed.

Plain language, friendly to people with limited reading confidence, and usable with one hand.

Not a medical app

Vuna does not diagnose, treat, monitor or advise. When something needs medical attention, its only job is to say so plainly and point to a qualified person.
